Helmsman's Log

Helmsman's Log
Stardate 6.8

I see that Franz didn't write a log before he went to sleep.

My name is Maxwell Nemo. I'm the pilot, and the mechanic, and whatever else we end up needing. But especially those two things. I know my shit. For awhile I was enlisted in the Plutonian military. I was sent offworld to fight in the war over Io. We fought against a private company military. It was purely over resources, no moral crisis, no rightgeous claims.

Back then, I was barely an adult, I dreamed of ships and glory and heroism. It's not like it is in the holoflicks. I was badly injured, despite the enhancements I got, and I was lucky enough to make it back home.

Plutonia's medicine is no slouch - I recovered, but my legs aren't quite what they used to be, and I ache in ways that only the green stuff helps. We're the most advanced culture in the system, as far as I know, and we still haven't figured out a cure for pain. Or it's probably just not a priority to Plutonia. If Squiggy wasn't so talented at gene resequencing and botany, I don't know what I'd do.

I wish I never was sent on my tour. I wish I got more time with Nayla and my aging parents. But the one good thing I gained was a passion for ships. I'd only ever flown smaller vehicles before. Little one-seaters that you sit on top of, and occasionally things like glidecars and tractordusters. Now I had real experience, not just dreams.

I got a job at a glidecar tuneup place to hold us over because the farm isn't doing well. But being behind the helm of a ship is my passion. Piloting is more fun than farming by megameters, but truly, engineering was my first love.

We took Million Suns out for another test flight the other night. The booster controls got stuck and, believe it or not, we broke orbit without getting the attention of sky patrol. We're orbiting the moon Styx now at a far distance. Almost out of fuel, but should be just enough for us to get back and touch down. I just need to put us in position for the first burn. Ion propulsion will help me reorient the ship but it's not great for actual propulsion. It's going to be a long trip, so I don't think I'll wake them up until it's time to land. If they wake up on their own, then maybe I'll see what I can whip up in the galley for breakfast.
